marie claire sat down with the Cronulla-raised star to talk about her new self-tanning line, her love of summer, and why her boyfriend hates Instagram.
Is there a woman in the world better suited to starting a tanning line than Lara Bingle? She’s the happy-go-lucky, sun-seeking Cronulla model who is more comfortable on the beach than she is on the runway.
“My mum was that beach girl, I’m that beach girl,” Bingle says. “That carefree Australian attitude has always been a real inspiration to me. I love the beach, I spend a lot of time there.”
Bingle is in town for a fleeting visit to launch The Base, her new line of self tanning and bronzing products. The range features everything from wash-off bronzing gel to shimmering skin illuminators and, Bingle’s favourite, a sheer coverage LB cream. “It’s just like a BB cream, only for LB,” she jokes. Nestled in an armchair in a beautifully renovated terrace in Sydney’s Paddington, there’s no doubt about it: Bingle is glowing. “A glow is good,” she says, smiling. “A tan always looks good, but a glow makes you feel good.”
MC: Where did the idea for The Base come from?
LB: Being around makeup and hair and photoshoots all my life, I wanted to create products that were illuminating as well as tanning. I wanted to make something of my own that looked luxurious, but at a small price. The most expensive product in the line is $39 and the cheapest, the tanning mitt, is $12.
MC: Why did you want to have a tanning line as opposed to a makeup line?
LB: I don’t like heaps of makeup, and I think less is more. I think with young girls in particular, they don’t know that you don’t need to wear a lot of makeup to look good. You just need a good base that makes you feel good that you can add to if you want to. Honestly, I wouldn’t even know where to start with cosmetics.
MC: Skin cancer is a big problem facing Australians. Is that one of the reasons you wanted to encourage fake tanning products?
LB: When I was younger my mum used to wear baby oil in the sun. I grew up thinking that was the way, and it’s not. I’m 27 now and your skin changes when you get older. You want to look after yourself. That’s why I think not baking yourself in the sun to look good is so important. You can do it other ways, and safe ways.
MC: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what would be the three things you would take with you?
LB: A really thick book, so it would last me a long time. Sunscreen. And a big shawl or a blanket. I’m always cold, I feel the cold really badly. I need to be warm!
MC: What are some of your favourite fashion brands?
LB: I love Dion Lee. I think his construction is ten out of ten. Another favourite is Celine. I always wear Celine because it’s minimal, but I go broke because it’s so expensive! But if I could wear one brand, it would probably be Celine. I like that it doesn’t have a lot of branding, it’s very easy to wear.
MC: Is social media important to you?
LB: I don’t take it too seriously. But I do think there’s no mystery anymore. Everyone knows everything from social media. Sometimes it’s nice not to know things and not to give everything away.
MC: Would you ever get off social media?
LB: Probably (laughs). My boyfriend isn’t a fan of social media. When we first met, he had no idea what it was and he wanted to get on Instagram because I was on it so much. He was always like, “what do you do on this thing?” But now he’s off it. Completely off it. He says to me, “I don’t understand Lara, who are you talking to, who are these people?” Maybe I’ll get off social media one day, but maybe I won’t. Who knows?
The Base by Lara Bingle launches this week.

LARA SHOWS NO SIGNS OF A RUMOURED PREGNANCY
The Lara Bingle pregnancy rumours have persisted, but when she stepped out in Cronulla yesterday, the thought-to-be-expecting star looked very ... un-pregnant?
Perhaps it’s a feat of visual trickery and she’s hiding something under that very clever skirt, but the baby bump everyone was expecting to see never quite eventuated.
Bingle, who has never confirmed or denied rumours there is a baby Bingle on the way, wore a light pink tight top with an army-inspired skirt and sky high black heels.
It was marked difference from the heavy all-black ensemble of a bulky scarf and oversized coat that she was wearing when she arrived in Sydney on Wednesday.
Calling into an IGA supermarket in Cronulla in Sydney’s south with her mother, Lara chatted with a fan before heading out to lunch at Double Bay’s Indigo Cafe with her best friend Vicki-Lee, who is currently expecting.

EXCLUSIVE: FIRST LOOK AT LARA'S SUMMER COTTON ON CAMPAIGN
Lara Bingle is the ultimate Aussie pin-up, thanks to her Sydney beaches roots, glowing skin and laid-back style – and they’re just a few of the reasons why we love her (her too-cute relationship with homegrown Hollywood heart-throb Sam Worthington is another). We caught up with the 27-year-old on the set of her summer Cotton On campaign, Bring It On, to get the inside scoop on her new tanning line The Base By Lara Bingle, her exercise regimen (wakeboarding and all), her go-to apps and who she thinks is Australia’s most stylish woman – it’s not who you expect.
What do you love most about working with Australian brand Cotton On?
They’re always thinking of their consumer. They’re always doing interesting things in the market that continue to excite me. The clothes are also phenomenal quality at a really great price point. They serve as the perfect basics in my wardrobe.
What was the highlight of shooting the new Christmas campaign?
We shot the latest campaign in Santa Monica. Shooting anytime at the beach are some of the best days that come with my job.
How has your relationship with Cotton On grown over the years?
I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the Cotton On family for so many years. They have allowed me to be so creative with designing my own collections within their brands and they continue to make me feel so inspired to achieve whatever I set out to do.
What does your summer exercise regimen include?
High-repetition and light weights are my secrets to toning. Long-distance, medium-speed running is my go-to for cardio, plus anything outdoors – I particularly love wakeboarding, swimming and surfing whenever I can.
How is The Base By Lara Bingle coming along?
I’m trying to challenge myself more by taking risks. I have found being hands-on in the development and creation of my own brand has been demanding and rewarding. It's been a great learning curve.
What are the key benefits and ingredients?
The Base By Lara Bingle is all about amazing beauty products that are high-quality, effective and extremely easy to use. Each product is designed to help transform your look and enhance your inner beauty. I selected premium-quality ingredients to perfect the ultimate glow – my objective has been to use as many natural ingredients as possible without comprising performance. The range will be available next month with more details to follow.
What was your response to your first-ever ELLE cover?
It’s my favourite shoot to date. I felt so humbled to be given the opportunity.
What do you think “brand Lara” represents?
I work hard on things I’m passionate about, I’ve stayed true to myself and I try to embrace all life throws at me with delicacy, respect and kindness.
What five apps can’t you live without?
SignEasy, HappyCow, Rosetta Stone, Candy Crush Saga and Rdio.
Who do you think is Australia’s most stylish woman?

LARA AND SAM HIT UP HIGH-END BABY BOUTIQUE AMID PREGNANCY REPORTS
Are they or aren't they? Either way, it seems like Sam Worthington and Lara Bingle have babies on the brain.
E! News has learned that the pair shopped at high-end baby boutique Bel Bambini in West Hollywood last week, shortly after reports that the couple are expecting their first child hit the Internet. An eyewitness tells E! News they looked around for baby items before heading to the second floor to check out nursery furniture.
Reps for the stars have remained silent on the baby news.
When they're not preparing for possible parenthood, these two lovebirds spent some quality time together with a cute date night. Worthington and Bingle were spotted catching a flick at the movie theaters in The Grove on Saturday afternoon.
The Aussie model, who dressed comfortably in loose-fitting and casual black pants and matching blouse, was photographed standing next to her beau as she waited for him to grab their movie tickets for the 3D animation film The Boxtrolls from the automated machine.
Earlier last week, the blond beauty was snapped by shutterbugs walking into a medical building in New York City wearing a white and ivory ensemble and noticeably covering up her maybe-baby bump with her hand.
The famous duo has been notoriously private about their relationship since getting together in September 2013, and even keep their social media activity to a minimum.

PREGNANCY RUMOURS IN OVERDRIVE AS LARA AND SAM VISIT MEDICAL CLINIC
This is one way to really fire up the pregnancy speculation.Lara Bingle has been snapped walking into a medical clinic in New York City on Monday.
The 27-year-old was accompanied by boyfriend Sam Worthington, who looked protective as he escorted Bingle inside while surrounded by photographers.
A change from her usual all-black, the Aussie model stepped out of the car wearing a cream, layered skirt that concealed her tummy and a high-neck top.
Adding to the speculation is news the model commented on friend and new mum Elyse Taylor’s comp card - showing her modelling statistics - saying: “Good [God] help me”, to which Taylor responded: “I have everything ready for you xxx”.
It is her first public comments on the topic and widely believed to be a confirmation she is pregnant.
That follows widespread rumours Bingle is expecting a baby with her 38-year-old actor beau.
According to the latest WHO magazine — a self-anointed “credible” source when it comes to celebrity goss — a handful of friends and sources have confirmed a Bingle/Worthington baby.
If Bingle is not pregnant, she certainly isn’t doing too much to dispel the rumours that have been swirling for the last few months.

LARA AND SAM 'EXPECTING A BABY'
A Sam Worthington and Lara Bingle bundle is definitely on the way.
That’s the gossip gospel — if we are to believe the weekly mags, whose role it is to amp up rumour and speculation.
According to the latest WHO magazine — a self-anointed “credible” source when it comes to celebrity goss — a handful of friends and sources have confirmed a Bingle/Worthington baby.
“Lara is just over three months’ pregnant,” a close pal of the couple tells WHO.
The magazine’s latest cover of the pregnancy is a total fait accompli with 27-year-old Bingle and 38-year-old Worthington looking to be parents in March.
“She’s 3 Months Pregnant”, “Lara & Sam’s Baby Joy!”, “The star couple are so excited”, reads the mag cover.
While the couple, who have been dating since last September, is yet to officially confirm a Bingle bundle, a slew of unnamed sources can’t possibly be wrong, right?
“Initially she had a bit of morning sickness, but that’s all over. She feels and looks amazing,” the close pal adds.
“We’ve known for a few weeks now, and everyone’s really excited for them.”
Even Bingle’s mum, Sharon has been quoted by the WHO source, saying she is “so happy and excited,” and “Lara’s the happiest she’s ever been.”
Despite the hype, the Aussie model has refused to comment on the speculation that started swirling again in July and her reps have denied that she is pregnant.

LARA SPORTING THE ALL BLACK TREND
Lara Bingle has been sporting a new stylish trend of draping herself in black with her man Sam Worthington.Bingle, who started the iconic bob blonde haircut, seems she wants to do a take-two of her fashion-forward ways.
Spotted in the US, Worthington and Bingle stepped out in New York wearing matching very city-sleek black sweaters and dark pants.
It was a far cry from the bubbly girl-next-door Bingle used to be when she was in a relationship with Aussie cricketer Michael Clarke.
It’s been a busy last few days for Worthington who spent Monday on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of his film Cake with his co-star Jennifer Aniston.
The loved-up pair made headlines this week with people speculating whether they were expecting their first child.
“Everyone is talking about it,” a well-placed source said in July.
“It’s hard to know if its true given how much stuff has been said about them but the rumour is definitely that Lara is pregnant.”
